Near Goght and Garni,
Kotayk Province, Armenia
Our ongoing project focuses on the restoration and revival of the historic Havuts Tar monastery, nestled within the Khosrov forest state reserve, a mere 3-4 km from Garni village. Havuts Tar stands as a silent witness to the profound tapestry of Armenian history, dating back to its founding in 426 by Catholicos Sahak Parthev and Saint Mesrop Mashtots.
The project delves deep into the legacy of Havuts Tar, tracing its evolution from a sanctuary for introspection and translation to a thriving hub of medieval Armenian culture. It flourished during the Middle Ages, safeguarding treasures like the priceless "Amenaprkich" cross, a symbolic gift bridging Byzantine and Armenian royalty. The monastery became synonymous with artistic excellence, nurturing the creation of exquisite manuscripts and miniatures, showcasing the pinnacle of Armenian artistry.
Challenges and Resilience
The narrative of Havuts Tar is not without adversity. The earthquake of 1679 struck a devastating blow, reducing the ancient Catholic church to ruins. Despite determined efforts by the Catholicos to rebuild using the original stones, invasions in the 18th century disrupted and ultimately led to the gradual abandonment of the site. Conflicts and financial limitations further hindered multiple attempts at restoration.
